Background and Objective 

Partners of the Afghanistan Logistics Working Group (LWG) visited the WFP Kabul Warehouse on 6 August 2025. The visit brought together 30 representatives from various humanitarian and development organisations, including UN agencies, international NGOs (INGOs), and national NGOs. 

 

Purpose of the Visit 

The visit aimed to facilitate discussions on shared logistical challenges, with a focus on long commodity lead times, border access issues, inventory management, space utilisation, and operational planning. 

Key objectives included: 

• Strengthening coordination among logistics partners and exchanging operation insights

• Sharing information on WFP’s infrastructure and operational capacity 

• Identifying potential areas for support, improvement, and partnership 

• Promoting transparency and shared learning within the logistics community 

Partners exchanged lessons learned, operational bottlenecks, and explored opportunities for improved alignment in warehouse usage and preparedness efforts. The group also discussed enhanced coordination mechanisms, including regular progress updates and potential joint logistics planning for upcoming seasonal and emergency responses.

Highlights & Discussion Points 

The visit facilitated productive discussions on shared challenges, including: 

  • Inventory tracking 

  • Operational, fleet, and maintenance 

  • Border clearance and temperature control 

  • Fire and safety protocols 

  • Space optimisation and resource allocation 

  • Seasonal and emergency preparedness 

 

During the visit, LWG members were able to observe WFP’s warehouse systems, tools, activities, and documentation practices in detail.  They shared lessons learned, identified bottlenecks, and explored practical solutions to enhance warehousing efficiency.

Participants valued WFP’s transparent and collaborative approach during the experience and and agreed to pursue joint planning and regular coordination moving forward. They also expressed strong appreciation for the WFP logistics team’s achievements, particularly in managing large-scale, multi-commodity operations and providing services to other humanitarian agencies across Afghanistan. Their recognition was a motivating moment for the team and reinforced WFP’s added value in national logistics coordination. 

The joint field visit to WFP’s Kabul Warehouse marked a successful activity under the Logistics Working Group 2025 Workplan, Indicator 2.1, by reinforcing inter-agency collaboration and laying the foundation for more integrated logistics operations across Afghanistan.

The visit emphasized the importance of shared learning and operational transparency amongst the humanitarian community to strengthen the effectiveness of humanitarian response efforts.

Overview of WFP Kabul Warehouse Facility Stored Items: Food and non-food items

  • Total Open Area: 113,370 m² 

  • Actual Storage Area: 21,880 m² 

  • Occupied space at time of visit: 18,920 m² 

  • Available space at time of visit: 2,960 m² 

  • Partner Services: WFP confirmed that these facilities are also available to other LWG Partners through formal Service Level Agreements (SLA), promoting more collaboration, sharing of logistics assets, and mutual operational support.
