Northern Sudan Operations

The Logistics Coordination Unit (LCU) is an inter-agency common service designed to facilitate logistics coordination for complex and large-scale emergencies under the custodianship of the World Food Programme (WFP). LCU’s logistics coordination and common services benefit all humanitarian organizations operating in Sudan and, therefore, indirectly all populations receiving support from the humanitarian community. All logistics activities are demand-driven, based on the expressed requirements of the humanitarian community and are all provided free of-of-charge.

In addition to fulfilling its mandate for logistics coordination in Northern Sudan, LCU worked with partners to establish the NFI Common Pipeline in 2004. Since its inception, LCU has acted as overall NFI Common Pipeline manager and in March 2009 assumed management of Pipeline warehousing operations.  In addition, at the request of the UN Country Team, LCU has acted as Sector Lead for the Non-Food Item (NFI) and Emergency Shelter (ES) Sector in Sudan since 2007.

Southern Sudan Operations

As of October 2010 the Cluster approach for Southern Sudan was activated as requested by the Humanitarian Country Team. In response, the Logistics Cluster was activated in Southern Sudan as a successor to UNJLC. The Logistics Cluster in Southern Sudan is continuing the logistics coordination, information management and facilitation of the common transport service provided by IOM, but has also taken a much more operational role including ongoing preparedness measures for common warehousing and emergency fuel provision.

The Logistics Cluster has transferred NFI activities in Southern Sudan to IOM and will no longer be facilitating NFI activities. Please note all Southern Sudan documents will be labelled as Logistics Cluster and can be found by selecting Southern Sudan under Locations. Updated emails and a contact list are also attached under contacts on the right column and for more information email sudan.juba@logcluster.org.
