1. HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sir J. Holmes arrived yesterday in Myanmar to meet with the broader
    humanitarian community and the Myanmar Government to discuss the
    support offered for the emergency response.
  • The first barge rented by the Logistics cluster for the interagency common
    transport service was loaded this afternoon in Yangon and will depart
    tomorrow morning for Bogale.
  • The Bangkok Logistics Cluster meeting remains well visited – more than 30
    organizations attended today’s meeting.

2.  CLUSTER ACTIVITIES UPDATES

  • Sir J. Holmes attended the head of cluster meeting held today in Yangon to
    coordinate the efforts of the humanitarian community to respond to the Nargis emergency.
  • The Logistics Cluster in Yangon contracted 3 barges with pushers for
    interagency use:


Barge 1: 200 mt capacity
Barge 2: 650 mt capacity
Barge 3: 800 mt capacity


These barges will operate ex Yangon and ex Pathein.

  • The cluster will continue looking for other barges in order to augment the
    capacity available for the users of the common transport service.
  • Update on logistics hubs:
  1. Pyapon – the site has been identified and can be reached by road
    and/or water. Mobile storage units have been supplied and are
    expected operational within three days.
  2. Bogale – a site has been identified. No further updates are available at
    this stage.
  3. Pathein – awaiting information from the assessment team, there is no
    further information on this hub.
  4. Labutta – three further storage units have arrived in Labutta and are
    expected operational within three days.
  5. Kyon Ma Ngay – due to a lack of NGOs active in the area, the local
    government has expressed some reservation regarding the
    construction of a logistics hub here and the status of this hub is still
    uncertain.
  • The next meeting of the Yangon Logistics Cluster cell will be tomorrow Tuesday 20 May 2008 at 1400 hrs.
  • The next meeting of the BKK Logistics Cluster will be Wednesday 21 May 2008 at 1100 hrs.

3. AIR TRANSPORT

  • The staging area at Don Muang airport is now operational and as of this week Don Muang airport takes over as the main hub for air transport of humanitarian items into Myanmar. Currently one IL76 and two AN12s will serve the airbridge. The capacity can be increase within short time if required.
  •  A 24 mt shipment from DEMA (Danish Emergency Management Agency) has
    already been accepted at the Don Muang hub.
  • Updated information on cargo flights arriving in Myanmar is being compiled on a daily basis in the air operations report and made available on the cluster webpage. The logistics cluster appreciates the effort of the partners and is asking participants to continue to compile the suggested format (available on the web) and to provide related information

4. ROAD TRANSPORT

  • The Logistics Cluster cell in Yangon has secured 30 trucks for a dedicatedtruck fleet for interagency road transport. A fuel depot will probably be established in Yangon to ensure fuel supplies for the truck fleet. The trucking capacity can be increased if there is sufficient demand from the users of the service.

5. WATER   TRANSPORT

  • The first barge rented for inter-agency use has been loaded today at the MITT terminal at Yangon port and will departure for Bogale tomorrow morning (20th May) The barge has been loaded with AFC and WFP cargo:
    ACF -->  25 mt of BP5 ( high energy biscuits )

     ACF -->  45 mt of NFIs including wash, kitchen sets, cooking sets, hygiene  sets and plastic sheeting

     WFP --> 5 mt of Veg Oil

     Total --> 75 mt

  • As per latest information, not yet confirmed by the MOFA in Paris, the MISTRAL will be redirected to Thailand for subsequent airlift of parts or all of this cargo to Myanmar by means of the Logistics Cluster.
